As this year's School to Work Chair, I am looking for ways that educators (elementary, middle and high school) and our members can work together in an effort to develop a strong future workforce. Recently, my organization, Altek, participated in a "teach the teachers" event sponsored by Greater Spokane, Incorporated. We were honored to have 10 teachers from local schools tour our facility. Our supervisors showed the teachers their departments, their people, their equipment and their jobs. The teachers asked questions about the types of skills needed in each area, the benefits we offer and experienced the manufacturing work environment hands on. Feedback was positive from all involved. It was wonderful to be able to have this type of interaction and information sharing. The benefits far outweighed the time it took to prepare for this function.
