As I begin to close out my year serving as your President, I want to take a moment to thank each of you and our Board of Directors.  Thank you for your trust in me as your leader.  Thank you to the Board of Directors; they are a devoted group of HR professionals, who not only serve on the board for INSHRM but are balancing their full-time jobs along with their personal interests such as hobbies, families and other volunteer efforts.  I am proud of the work this team of dedicated directors has accomplished in 2014.  These directors have a BIG heart for INSHRM; there are times I know their volunteer role has felt like a full-time job, yet their dedication has never wavered.  Each of them have faithfully served the INSHRM mission and when making decisions have asked "What is the member benefit?"  Thank you.        


We’ve had a tremendous year!  Here are just some of the achievements from 2014:  new website integration, membership increase, record luncheon attendance, hosting NHRMA regional conference, SLOAN increased participation and recognition, hosted our first Supervisor Training, PFW (Partners for Work) partnership with Rotary 21, and an upcoming partnership with Sue the Dinosaur for our Holiday Party!!    

From SHRM National we have been honored to receive the Excel Platinum Award, the Foundation Award, and the Membership SuperStar Award.  From the Washington State Council (WSC) we have been honored to receive the Chapter Leadership Award.  Each of these awards is because of the efforts of the 2014 Board of Directors and volunteers.  While we are honored and appreciate these awards, the true award for each of us comes from knowing we have met your expectations for INSHRM membership.  As we move to a new year, we will look to each of you for feedback and direction for 2015. 

Once again, thank you all for a tremendous year. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as your Chapter President.

Updates and Information


Now is the perfect time to become certified!

INSHRM offers study groups, free of charge, in preparation for the PHR/SPHR exams.  Study groups will begin in September for the December 1 – January 31 testing window.  This is your last chance to certify through HRCI and then convert (free of charge) to SHRM’s new competency-based certification model. 

INSHRM currently has 2014 Learning Systems in stock at a great discount to our membership.  Regularly, the books cost $850 + shipping for non-SHRM members.  However, through INSHRM, the cost is $495 + shipping—not a bad discount!

Workplace Flexibility

With a new year coming soon, most HR professionals are deep into open enrollment, planning/budgeting for 2015, and prioritizing projects. Don’t forget to start the New Year giving consideration to your flex programs. To be an employer of choice and retain your talent, you may want to consider what it takes to be an effective workplace. When Work Works, Family Works Institute and SHRM will continue promoting the importance of workplace flexibility into 2015 and to get our INSHRM members thinking about effective workplaces, see the below link.

The Inland Northwest Society of Human Resources Managers (INSHRM) joined forces with the Spokane Rotary Club #21 in the Partners for Work Interview Showcase on Monday, November 17, 2014.

The PFW Interview Showcase is an opportunity for local companies to support’s efforts to help secure meaningful, gainful employment for differently enabled individuals in the Spokane community. The PFW serves as a great interview experience for PFW candidates. It gives them an opportunity to practice being in the interview setting.
